On the Road 2.09.2010 |

I love Kerouac. His novels about traveling are only points along the line of journey narratives, but for me there is something about them that is unique. They a particular America. They speak to a certain spirit.

One aspect I love, particularly of On The Road, but it can also be seen in his other works, is the meandering of the journey. There is a goal and there is a schedule, but more often than not these are secondary to the process and motion.

Today, amidst yet another slovenly couch-day, I watched Into the Wild and The Go-Getter. Two movies joined by Jena Malone and "The Journey".

I don't have a lot to say on either movie. Maybe in a couple days I will have articulate thoughts, but for today I simply wanted to remind us all that seldom is it about getting there. The truly important things happen not as we prepare, nor once we arrive, but during the journey.

Personally this feels like I've been on a journey for the better part of the last five years.

I'm trying to see the importance of these moments. Today's films reminded me of this.
