In Rainbows 11.06.2007 |
this is not going to be an all important post, more of an, "oops i forgot this was here," kind of post.
in truth since Leslie has returned to school i have found that this distraction is (exactly that) a distraction. there are so many other things i should be doing or thinking about. i don't mean to disappoint my adoring fan. :)
as a return i wanted to make a quick comment. a few weeks back (Oct. 10th) Radiohead released an album under the auspicious and under-advertised premise of shifting the paradigm of the music industry. lots of fanfare followed. some decrying Radiohead as supporters of the burgeoning pirate-class, others cheering the insightful and clairvoyant move to reconnect musicians with their public.
the follow-up has centered on whether or not the model had succeeded and how much money did Radiohead actually make. both are interesting discussion points. neither interest me. i have not read anyone reviewing the music itself. most seem to default to "if its Radiohead, its good." but if we stuck with that we would have to accept all those Van Halen albums featuring Sammy Hagar, or we would have to accept (more controversially) that Zeitgeist is a good work by the Pumpkins. Sadly neither of those presumptions is true.
in effort to not fall into this with Radiohead i have been listening to In Rainbows very critically. i have to say i like the album. it really does carry off a full throttle Radiohead presence without sounding like a strict rip-off of one of their prior works.
in fact the most striking thing about In Rainbows for me, is not that it sounds good as i would suspect a Radiohead album to, but that it sounds like someone else.
a couple years past several music journalist began talking about My Morning Jacket in terms of Radiohead. comparing their rise and maturing process to Radiohead, even calling them the american Radiohead. this may show my ignorance, but i never could make the jump. i couldn't understand the comparison. i find that i enjoy MMJ as much as RH, but i didn't know how to make the comparison. they were just too far apart for me.
and then comes In Rainbows. about halfway through the album i realized that Radiohead sounded alot like My Morning Jacket on this latest offering.
a case of art following art following art?
