not that it happens frequently. but i am a mess meeting those that i look up to. i am sure if i ever actually met Robert Smith i would not be able to articulate a single intelligible sentence.
that said i had an interesting day. i was lucky enough to be interviewed at Thomas Hacker Architects. Thom is not THE architect, but he has an impressive resume and list of built works. walking in to his office i felt an envy. i want to work in an environment that inspires and challenges... and at present i do not.
the interview felt good. it was quick, but it didn't feel like i was barking up the wrong tree. apparently they are supposed to be getting back to me today...
i had butterflies all through the meeting, thinking about that i could be working for, not just anyone, but someone on my list of GOOD ARCHITECTS. it was exciting and i am sure i looked like a little kid waiting to see christmas morning.
i don't have much more to say. i'm kinda holding my breath until i hear from them.
last night, for those of you that don't know, i got a chance to see Pete Yorn. it has been since 2001 since i have seen him. also it has been something like 25 months since i have had an opportunity to go to a rock show. a friend gifted the show to Leslie and i for christmas.
i didn't think that going to this show would be such a learning experience. mostly i had a fear that kevin and i would be reprising the rolls of John Cusack and Jack Black in High Fidelity.
the venue was nice. the Crystal Ballroom on Burnside. it felt like a place to have a small venue rock show. large enough to accommodate crowd, but small enough to demand that they stand very close together. think the large room at the Knitting Factory or the Launchpad without the soundstand right in the middle.
we got there a little before the doors opening and chitchatted our way to the door. procured libation. staked claim. and waited.
first point, aside from Yorn covering The Smiths, it was the night of AWFUL covers. don't get me started on what someone did to the Cure. GROWL!
second, i didn't realize kevin and i were the only ones actually attending the show. everyone else seems to have sent their camera crew to the show, so that they could watch it later. i was overly amazed at the shear number of cameras and recording going on. at to that everyone with their camera-phone snapping away. i got to watch the show in life and memorex at the same time. my wife pointed out that holding aloft your little glowing LCD phone screen has replaced the, thankfully, lost tradition of waving your lighter to-and-fro.
third, Bushmills is good.
fourth, it is unreal to go to a rock show and not have anyone smoking. i was seriously off balance. i am an avid supporter of the clean air movement, as i only like cigarettes when i am the one smoking them while playing pool, drinking with abandon and listening to a jukebox. i have little love for chewing my air at bowling alleys and rock shows and diners, but i do still expect it when i am out in those places.
overall last night served to remind me that i love going to live shows and that i am not too old for it. the 50+ year old couple in front of us however were.
today i was Christmas shopping for my wife, and it put me in a great mood. not so much that it was specifically shopping for Christmas, but that i was buying gifts for my wife. when i told her that i was excited about it she accused me of dripping with sarcasm.
those of you that know me know that i am NEVER sarcastic... but really how do you drop a year round attitude of snark and sarcasm, and show your christmas spirit, without those around you assuming you are still full of scrooge? i find that i am full of excitement and anticipation... i am not sure those around me see this.
maybe this reflects a larger issue, of my general grumpiness.
